It tears my up, too, every time I hear it. I'll flash on the scene at the hotel where that song starts and it gets slower and slower until... Their lives are fading away just like the song.
So many memorable things about that movie. The lonely sound of the Morse Code emanating from a deserted building in California. Such a lonely feeling.
The sub leaving Australia for home a second and final time, going home to die.
Thinking about it in depth after all these years still fills me with desolation.
