This article from Central PA magazine will give you an overview.
The Carlisle Indian School research page from the Cumberland County Historical Society's website will give you more specific sources.
Education has to be voluntary for it to be education. Otherwise, it's indoctrination and cultural murder.
The Carlisle Indian School offers an example of the indoctrination approach. This works on some people, though they become damaged and impoverished emotionally and psychologically to different degrees. Others turn into reactive uncritical, sometimes even fanatic, defenders of their culture in all of its facets, noble and savage. And others simply die of grief and despair.
Abandoning the people of Afghanistan to the most savage iterations of their culture is certainly not acceptable, although we seemed to think it was OK when those who embraced those iterations were fighting the Soviets. But the approach to cultural change through education has to come from the people themselves. (Side note: Why do you think that the Taliban finds education for girls to be such a threat to their worldview?)
We can offer them a menu, and should. They choose what to eat.
