I was about 7. My mother was a legal immigrant and had to renew her visa. My siblings and I waited the whole day 9am -5pm in a hot office in Los Angeles after a 1-1/2 hour drive as the slow crawl of paperwork was processed by a single window. Dozens of people were in line ahead of us and dozens were behind.
It was torture for someone my age and I know my mother wasn't to thrilled either. The many varied languages I heard that day was like traveling the world. She had plenty of time to tell me how long she waited for her initial application to be accepted - over 8 months and how others she knew often waited three years or more because they weren't married to someone from the US. The buildings were already old and smelled of asbestos tile and hidden mildew, the sort that would be declared hazardous and torn down or purged in the 1990s.
But it made my mother legal in the eyes of the US government and so she willingly went through all the hoops whenever they asked her to. All those people and millions of legal immigrants like them all over the US waited in rooms like that one - some for consecutive days because their paperwork was not in order - yet they wanted to be in the US legally and respected the laws of the United States so they complied.
Now, decades later, we have folks who feel it is acceptable and permissable to let millions cross our borders and break our laws - cheat those who play by the rules, pay their taxes and waited months or years to come to the US.
And these same "compassionate" folks suggest it is these legal immigrants and their descendants who are racist, intolerant and without compassion because they dare suggest that illegal border crossing needs to be controlled before it takes away their jobs, income and future they have patiently worked so hard to secure.
