Obama has not apologized for associating with a former criminal whose crimes were committed while Obama was a child.
I'm not sure it's relevant how old Obama was when the crimes were committed. I see in the news that Obama's campaign is running with "I had no idea he had this history when I worked with him." That might work.
I notice nobody wants to come anywhere near the abortion clinic example. Under what capacity would you be willing to work with Ayers? Does it bother you at all that someone with his past and ideas has no trouble finding a place in our academic communities? Note that the University of Illinois at Chicago
Keep in mind that it isn't just about Ayers. It's about Obama's much wider pattern of leftist associations and ideas. If Obama gets in power with a heavily-Democratic controlled Congress, leftists will be ecstatic. I won't.
Just as an aside, Ayer's "letter to the New York Times" first appeared about five years later in his blog, as something he "found." It's tagged under "letters" and "short-short fiction." I have found no evidence that it ever appeared in the Times, or anywhere else besides his blog. Maybe he sent it and it wasn't published for some reason (which would be very odd). Or maybe he wrote it in 2006. The version you linked to does not mention this.
You might want to spend some time on his blog, just browsing around.
