More of Tom's Lies

Here was his post in Current Events:

"We went through all this here in excruciating detail a few years back. People spent a long time breaking their backs trying to pin a crime, or even an outright lie, on Bush. Eventually the liberal consensus was reached that even if Bush didn't actually lie, he somehow created a penumbra of impressions designed to make a false picture in the mind of the gullible American public. The discussion pretty much stopped there.

As for investigations, there was an investigation. It didn't come up with the answers the Left wanted, i.e. and impeachment, so it was dismissed and forgotten. Maybe you can get some information out of it.

Cheney is right.

Read the Duelfer Report. Or, to save time, just go to the key findings."

Let's look at the obvious lies and distortions in what he's just written. It's not like anyone with more than one neuron in their head would need any proof of the idiocy of his post than the simple phrase "Cheney is right" but he had steam coming out of my head way before I even got to that bizarre phrase.

First of all, we did go through excruciating detail not only a few years back but over and over during the entire Bush administration and the consensus was far from the one Tom is trying to paint. To many of us, the evidence of crime was far beyond anything that would be required in a court of law to put most of the administration away for many years and possibly put them in front of a firing squad. What prevented it from being "proved" in the sense that Tom's alluding to is that the body that could have brought charges was completely controlled by the Bush administration until 2006 and then the tiny majority the Democrats held in Congress ensured that even if something started such as impeachment proceedings, they would have failed due to the march-in-step Republican Senate blockade. The political fallout of beginning that process and failing would have been huge.

The Justice Department has been turned from what was once a proud and fiercely independent citizen watchdog to a bought and paid for rubber stamp of Dick Cheney's bastardized version of the Constitution.

When Democrats did try to make noise in Congress they were threatened with the "nuclear option" to remove their ability to filibuster. When they asked for investigative powers against the administration they were denied rooms to meet in and media access. One hearing they were relegated to the basement of the Capital and when they went on too long, the power was turned off on them.

The reason people broke their backs to try to pin crimes on Bush had nothing to do with guilt or innocence but instead because every legitimate and traditional path for the required investigation was blocked by Republicans. Let's also not forget that during all of this the administration was engaged in widespread domestic wiretapping and surveillance and it's not a stretch to believe, given the bullying we saw in other areas, that they had dirt on Congressmen and potential adversaries they'd use to prevent any real threat.

Tom, nobody on the opposite side of your bizarre world let the administration off the hook as you state. If the conversation died on here it's not that you won or you convinced anyone of their folly but that we just wore out trying to talk some sense into you idiots. Other internet blogs where they don't allow the horrific style you assholes use to debate including allusions to traitorous actions or cowardice, never stopped presenting evidence. It piled up daily until the smoking gun was a glowing cannon barrel.

This steady parade of whistle blowers that either resigned posts within the administration or were booted out because they wouldn't tow the line, all painted amazingly consistent pictures of the abuses they saw, the assault on intellectualism, the twisting of facts, and the addition of bullying and power-grabbing politics into every nook and cranny of public policy. Executive privilege protected the participants from the accusations. The people that needed to testify under oath never had their day in court.

You know as well as any of the rest of us of the criminality of Bush and his cohorts, the needless bloodshed he caused, and the huge tear in our social fabric they created but you'll never admit it. It would be a feeling of defeat, something a person without a spine and without true integrity could never do.

I used to believe I could have a beer with anyone on here. You'd be wearing yours and that would be me restraining myself.
