The self-indulgent, self-appointed autocracy IS the middle class. They really thought that if they played the game by the rules the rich would let them into the country club. The rich have been waging economic war on the middle class because they (the MC) are, as a group, the single largest holders and owners of property.
Just look at Google Earth and what is the single most common artifact on earth's surface? The single family home. Collectively, it represents the largest accumulation of value on the planet, and it is owned (at least in part) by the middle class. The banks own a big piece of it too.
What's this financial crisis all about? The deliberate devaluation of housing prices and home values so it can be snapped up at bargain prices; and to intimidate and manipulate the MC by threatening to take their houses away from them.
Go back to writing your executive hygiene fiction, Techie. You obviously haven't been paying attention.
