Not an all or nothing thing

Maybe it is not so much about where they are built as where they are supported.

If the products are assembled elsewhere but all warranty and support were American it might make a nice compromise. It would not be as simple as a 2-3 line comment on HZ, but I would welcome higher prices for manufactured goods if it supported our economy.

I am all for having a TV/telephone/stereo/microwave/computer/laptop for every room and/or every family member but I would prefer to have a strong full employment economy with higher prices, better more plentiful jobs and fewer new products to take the place of products that are thrown away instead of being repaired. I talked to a guy recently who told me that instead of buying ink cartridges, he buys a new inkjet printer for individual work stations when he runs out of ink because it is cheaper in the long run than cartridges. The printer costs about $70 and the 2 cartridges required are abour $80

We did stop manufacturing and assembling electronics decades ago but the loss of tech rep jobs and many other service jobs is more recent and the numbers are significant.

I am not a fan of government regulation but there needs to be a way to bring jobs back and some tax incentives or other support for companies willing to hire American is better than a nation of non-commission salespersons, and food service careers. I almost included bill collectors and telemarketers but those jobs are also going offshore.

Given the choice of two new cars and a houseful of new electronics that go obsolete or break down in a couple of years vs good jobs, 5-10 year old stuff that can be repaired, and money in the bank is not a hard choice for me.
