re: One-note samba

"We're not building anything in this country because foreigners can do it cheaper. "

Let's start with the obvious, we are building some things, and the US has produced lots of cheaper products in the past.

More obvious stuff, Japan used to be the place to make cheaper products, and still manages to makes some cheaper products.

So, you say "foreigners can do it cheaper".

By which you mean countries such as Mexico, China, India, ect. And it is true that they can make some products cheaper and better. China can also do things like build a modern airport in about 1/2 the time that it requires to build an airport in the US. China can build an airport in a shorter time than is required to the paperwork in order to be allowed to build an airport in the US.

Why can "foreigners can do it cheaper"?
High labor cost?

Question: are unions making labor in the US cheaper or more expensive?
Could union make labor cost lower if that was something they wanted to do?
Could Union make labor cost higher if that is something they wanted to do?

Now, using human labor to dig coal by hand and haul off with animal or humans is not an example of low labor costs. Whereas using modern methods of mining coal is an example of low labor cost.
Another example of low labor costs is having a car factory using robotic assembly lines.
An example of high labor cost is not having work force which educated enough to do the job- requiring a company to pay to have them trained and/or suffering the consequences due to their incompetence.
The cost per man hour is not the same thing as labor costs- one could have highly paid employees which result in low labor costs. And highly paid and competent management can certainly be cheaper than less competent
management.

Finally, in America there is no selected group of people who can run a business. The Clinton or the Carter could be the CEO of a company that makes cars.

Now, do you have any other solution other than taxing or somehow outlawing the products that "foreigners can do it cheaper".

Or is governmental tyranny your only solution to this supposed problem.

Of course I would say our trade imbalance mainly has to do with importing oil, but "foreigners can do it cheaper" meme usually isn't used in that context. The meme for that, is Americans consume too much.
