1: Advocating expanding the Empire at any cost is a foolish goal. It masquerades as "patriotism", and expanding "freedom" and "democracy". Some people promote all manner of warfare and aggression under that banner.
2: Opposing anything which would cost one money. Not being able to afford to do anything about climate warming, protecting the environment from pollution by the charter members of the Empire, expanding health care to all citizens are all items which are deciders for some.
Unfortunately there are people who make every decision based upon those factors and then warp science and reality to justify them. You can tell if they favor or oppose anything, such as mileage requirements on vehicles, not based upon the greater need but their pocketbook.
