This is nothing but bad judgement and inept protocol. It is no more significant than POTUS giving the German Chancellor a back rub. Embarassing, stupid, but not a hanging offense.

As far as the unnamed State Department official's alleged remark, can that be any worse than Cheney's dissing an entire continent of our allies by dismissing them as a powerless and ineffectual "Old Europe".
