I like the concept. It's especially ironic, since the one thing we have succeeded at as a society is the ability to provide luxury goods at very reasonable prices. It's the essentials, like education, health care and sound public administration which are rapidly becoming too expensive.
Who provides "luxury goods" (and most other goods) to Americans?
Who provides our education, an ever-increasing amount of our health care, and public administration?
Which of these are produced in competitive environments, and which aren't?
Certain needs were long ago assigned the label "too important to leave to the private sector." It shows.
If there's one meme I've never understood, it's the idea that if a government monopoly produces something, it will be cheaper than if the free market does it.
