"Yes, we know about the Inquisition, the Crusades, the Salem witch trials, etc." Do we?

Yeah, I'd agree that scholars of history, true intellectuals that have a curious side about human nature, and people that don't get their religious history lessons in Sunday School certainly know the truth but I think the percentage of American Christians that fall into one of those categories is tiny.

I could care less when talking about this subject what radicals in Islam are doing today and playing this inane game of comparing the worst of the abuses with modern Christian abuses. Religions constantly evolve and go through cycles of violence and enlightenment. One doesn't have to go back too far to find relatively peaceful and productive eras of Islamic culture. It's ironic to find that those periods were disrupted by none other than the "good" Christians.

American Christians for the most part are completely ignorant about the history of their faith and the potential for horrendous abuse should the political winds shift slightly. It's imperative to continually try to educate other humans of where it all came from. Sitting back and pretending that everything's just fine because some other philosophical group is carrying the current violent baton is naive at best.
