That was the character Jon Lovitz played on SNL, the perpetual liar. Why is it, when I hear an explanation of somebody's interpretation of some obscure Bible verse that has huge logic holes in it, that all I hear is his voice saying "Yeah, that's the ticket".

I appreciate your two cents on this but whether you're "spiritual" or not there simply is no defense of inane passages like that one. In my mind something like this was written way after the fact to rationalize the whole Jesus story. The fact that it's poetic and uplifting is commendable but the final part makes it laughable.

That label "spiritual" is a valid one if you're talking about our common humanity or a sense of oneness with the universe but as soon as you start attaching Christian folklore and an acceptance of the whole Jesus story to your definition, the label doesn't fit anymore. If you see validity in a verse like that, you're a Christian.

The more I learn about religious history the more I'm certain that the Jesus story was simply derived from earlier Pagan mythology and that the odds of there being some living and breathing messiah during that time period are pretty slim. To me that's mind-blowing that the peer pressure of Christian families and communities could keep going such a farce for so many centuries despite huge evidence the whole thing was nothing more than a fable or a huge embellishment of some very human story.
