Many of our cultural and educational institutions have been absorbed by the ideology of "progressivism," which is the current fashionable name for collectivist ideas on economics and social organization. Essentially this is Gramsci's "long march through the institutions," although it's the result of a cultural phenomenon feeding back on itself, not any kind of Master Plan.
Material progress and prosperity in these institutions became "ungood" about the same time as it became grossly evident that collectivism would never deliver the prosperity it had always promised.
When the contrast between the results of collectivism and Western individualism became too obvious to make excuses for any more, the idea of progress and material prosperity itself had to be denigrated. This started in earnest in the U.S. around the late 60s.
If you look at the old Soviet and Chinese posters, they are replete with smokestacks, power lines, tractors, dams, and towering structures of industrial progress.
I suspect now such posters would somehow involve yurts and windmills.
