Boy does that sum it up. That old Republican and Libertarian mantra emerges once again. And what will happen if your wife (who I assume is the one with the health insurance in your family) loses her job or becomes physically disabled herself? Will you be paying the outrageous costs of COBRA? Will you find a private plan that has huge deductibles that will drive you into bankruptcy if catastrophic illness or injury strikes?
There's plenty of converts that once believed as you do Tom that have been wiped out financially by the rigged system or denied lifesaving care except at emergency rooms long after it's too late.
I clearly admit that the goal should be the destroy the huge influence private health insurers have at this time. That industry needs to be greatly reduced. I don't want to see it go away though. If someone wants more than what the government has to offer and has the money to pay for it, let em. Nothing's going to stop them anyway.
You see it as meddling in the free market. I see it as undoing a situation that should never have been allowed to develop in the first place. The health care model does not fit the insurance model. Physicians take an oath to heal everyone that needs it, not to be beholding to an industry who's business model is designed to deny care in order to maximize profit.
It's almost like the absurd situation that has evolved where cigarette companies are being forced to create smoking cessation programs and advertise how vile their product is. You can't bring costs down to the consumer in health care unless you create an untenable business environment for the insurance companies to work against their own best interest. They'll never agree to that. We shouldn't expect them to.
