re: Something my sister kept repeating to me.

"I have believed for a very long time that we are the product of chemical reactions in our brain. Our endocrine system creates our thoughts, our likes, dislikes, loves, hates, etc. "

Well, you could also say that everything said on this board is product of computer bytes.

What is causing the chemical reactions?

It is a given that thought affects the chemical reactions, just as it is a given that chemicals can affect thought and emotion.

I would say the debate/struggle about chemical vs spirituality. Has to do with control [see that silly Matrix movie].
Chemical reactions *assumed* the human condition is solvable. Such as if you knew the chemical reactions involved you could stop murderers from murdering.

Another chunk of baggage of the "chemical reaction creates our thoughts", is the premise that life was an accident and is a series of accidents explainable as solely
a series of chemical reactions.

There are a lot of good things to be said about science being applied to understanding the brain. And looking at the issue by understanding chemical reactions, is one way one can look at it scientifically.

One could easily say there is a lot of value using science to understanding anything. And one can see that science has been and is undervalued. But it's a serious and obvious error to assume that science is the only solution or only thing of value.

An idea is not bound nor contained in the universe we know anything about- or said differently, an idea could be not of this universe.
And though ideas can apparently be transmitted, it's not as straight forward as some might imagine. I present, modern education as Exhibit "A" of this being wantonly overly simplified and not understood.
