Every solution proposed for AGW involves vast amounts of wealth and power accrued to central political authorities, sometimes on a planetary scale. Some of the proposals I've seen from the U.N. are terrifying, and go a great deal further than "higher taxes and stricter regulation." These are the same organizations funding many of the studies.
With environmentalists, all you need to show is the slightest shadow of self-interested industrial involvement in the funding of a science project, and every bit of data produced by those scientists becomes instant garbage, no discussion, no appeal. The corruption of the data is treated as axiomatic. On the other hand when the governments have a large stake in it...well, there really is no other hand for them, is there? Their side is the side of the angels. It's "ideological instinct," I suppose.
You simply cannot trust people who tend to profit or lose financially from a decision to be objective about it. And the more they have at stake, the less you can trust them.
This should be true for everyone, not just the people you don't like. If you're going to follow the money, follow all of it. Right now, the climate change industry as a whole is running at around $1.5 trillion a year.
And it wouldn't hurt spend at least a little bit of time now and then following the power.
