Sea story

My superhero contribution was no big deal, but it may have prevented a real disaster so I feel I can claim it in this category.

We were bringing the yacht Marrakech (Express 37) home to Santa Cruz from Catalina Island after a race, and I was one of the deck apes on her crew. The skipper woke me up to stand a helm watch, and gave me a course to steer. Before taking the tiller, I took a look at the chart and realized he had forgotten to correct for compass variation, which in that part of the world was about 15 degrees.

Lying dead ahead of us in the fog, about 20 miles N was Point Lobos, a cape jutting several miles out into the Pacific. Without the compass correction, we would have slammed into the rocks in the dark. There were seven of us on board.

The skipper was pissed when I told him about it, but one glance at the chart was enough to convince him I was right.
