Re: Re: On "movements"

Your first point, which seems to be trying to throw my words back at me, is a bit too opaque, I'm afraid. At least, as a rebuttal I have a hard time parsing it. The "ACM" for short did in fact arise in reaction to the perception that the position of the "white protestant nation" was being eroded by immigrants in the '20s, and in the '30s was added a reaction against the New Deal. Are you actually agreeing with me, but it's so painful you have obscurantize it?

Your response to my thumbnail sketch of the history of the ACM is more than a little inadequate. If you dispute it, please provide your own history of the American Conservative Movement. Seriously, I would be interested. When I set out some time ago on a Quixotic quest to understand Conservatism, I was struck by how little information is actually out there on its origins. To hear conservatives tell it, the ACM either just happened, or it's always been there, established by Moses under the aegis of the secret 11th commandment. I had to do a lot of reading of a lot of sources to put together my present understanding.

Oh, and BTW, the history "White Protestant Nation" really exists; I don't make stuff up. It's a long and amazingly boring history of the ACM, written in a style that resembles a genealogy, one begat after another.
