All Too True

Religion is grounded on fear. The inconvenience of losing some territory or resources is nothing next to the fear of eternal damnation and suffering - or alternately the reward of more land is nowhere near the promise of immortality in a land of milk and honey - or 50 virgins.

That's why religion is so powerful and growing more powerful all the time. When the modern age arrived it pushed religion a bit into the background. Suddenly MAN was the new god - and like Perseus seemed to have stolen the fire of the gods and created automobiles, planes and an electrical world. Suddenly medicine replaced prayer and science seemed able to explain the workings of the Earth.

Now, however, those miracles are old hat. New generations still have the same old fears that their ancestors did. What happens when I die? Is their a chance for eternal life if I sign on with this group that seem to have all the answers. The scientific movement pushed religion back for awhile and offered a new path - but now religion has adapted and is once again leading the billions of fearful (and unscientific) to their temples, churches and synagogues.

Religion is a pacifier and keeps many folks occupied, while making the leaders quite rich, but the nature of religion - which claims to speak the truth - make religious conflicts inevitable. They can't all be true, and so they by default must belittle, berate, demean and eventually destroy their competition.
