Turning over the entire health care system to the government (single payer) is a bad solution. It's socialism. Converting an entire private industry into a government-controlled monopolistic cabal ("exchanges") is a bad solution. It is economic fascism.
It's really time to stop framing the issue on all sides as "how do we get government to properly run health care?"
There are workable and realistic ways to increase access and decrease costs. The current government isn't interested in them because there's no power to be had.
The virtue of a private system comprised of many different companies doing many different things is not that a free market is more competent, less greedy, or less corrupt than a government monopoly. It is that any idiocy or corruption is not universal, and there are still choices and workable alternatives.
Enron went down, but didn't take the country with it. Imagine the result if Enron had been a government-controlled and backed energy monopoly, essentially the only "energy company" in the country. We got a taste of this when Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae hit the skids.
