Banks wouldn't make any college loans without the government subsidies. It wouldn't be profitable. Get it????
So instead of subsidizing banks to make loans they would never make in the first place, bypass the middleman and make the loan directly to the student. This is an example of where the government should actually be intervening in the market: when the free market won't do it on its own.
