The whole point of the story is based on a poll that asserts the majority of tea partiers are "evangelical" The poll is cited more than once. It was commissioned by the“Faith &Freedom Coalition†in an obvious attempt to boost their own political power.
The firm hired to conduct the poll was Public Opinion Strategies. It appears that their polls are not intended to measure public opinion, but engineered to sway it. You don’t even have to bother to look at their methodology because they’re upfront with what the do for their clients.
^Public Opinion Strategies has established itself as a specialist in “combat message development†— the science of creating effective messages in which the opposing side is aggressively engaged. We do more than simply monitor public opinion; we develop messages that defend our client’s interests while impacting complex public policy issues.^
