Government spending

The type of employment that actually grows an economy is that which generates more real wealth than it consumes. Not much government spending or government employment falls into that category. Try and think of any government or government-sponsored operation that turns a profit.

If employment were that easy, the government could just hire everyone and pay us all $100,000 a year. With money from the Magic Money Elves. Or we could hire a million people to dig holes while a million others follow them and fill them up.

By definition, government spending requires the existence of a thriving private sector generating enough wealth that the government can take a portion for its legitimate needs without damage. There comes a point where the private sector can't handle the load any more, and the takers outnumber the givers. We are very close to the point right now where over half of Americans essentially pay little or no income taxes. This is not good in a democracy.
