Re: NSDAP

Hitler was not anti-communist because he opposed the idea of a single all-powerful party running things, but because the communists were major rivals for power in Germany. Nazis or Marxists - there was no room for both in a totalitarian system, and it was a close call as late as 1932 whether Germany would go one way or the other (see election results for 1932 - probably the last election the Nazis hadn't fixed). Sure as hell real democracy was on its last legs. Two murderous gangs fighting over the same turf. As they say in the movie, there can be only one.

^"The party had to play both sides of the tracks. It had to allow Strasser, Goebbels and the crank Feder to beguile the masses with the cry that the National Socialists were truly 'socialists' and against the money barons. On the other hand, money to keep the party going had to be wheedled out of those who had an ample supply of it."^

Do you think what they told the businessmen was any less of a lie than what they were telling the larger group of voters? Do you really think that an economy under a totalitarian Nazi regime would have been allowed to proceed without any interference from the government or outright nationalization?

The Soviet Union had big industrialists and landlords. It had a wealthy ruling class. They just worked for the State. Not much changed in that category except definitions after the Soviet Union fell.

If you look up "fascism" on Wikipedia, it's a complete dog's breakfast. There's a reason the definition is so damn hard to nail down. The kind of people who make a living defining social terms are generally left-leaning, and they don't like where the basic concepts lead them. Most non-professionals have reduced the word to another meaningless synonym for "m*f*cker"

Cut the crap away, including the rhetoric slung around by fascist and communist leaders looking for support in the years before they gained absolute power, and look at the real world. Real-world fascist regimes and real-world Marxist regimes are one and the same as far as methods and results are concerned.

Fascism - and communism - were never about Left and Right. They were never on opposite ends of any "spectrum." They were both about raw, bloody power for a centralized authority, and telling the saps whatever they need to hear to gain and keep it. Around the world, in one incarnation or another, they're still doing it today.

"Left." "Right." Screw it. Do I have the freedom to live and prosper or not? Do I have the right to my own property and wealth or not? Do I have the right to free opinions, speech, and worship? Do I have the right to live without fear of my door being broken down and being hauled off to a gulag/concentration camp? REAL rights - rights that keep others from destroying or confiscating my life and life's work. Does my nation live in peace with neighbors or attempt to bring all things under their totalitarian rule? Is it always about the power of the State, and the submission of the citizen to it?

Stop listening to what the thugs throughout history tell us and look at what they DO.
