Socialism has become linked to top heavy authoritarian government, but that's not the only type. You needn't look any further than a typical small Midwestern town to see the other type of socialism, a type of socialism that is organic and comes from a common community of like minded individuals who have a shared culture, history, social norms, and goals which forms the basis of community spirit.
Members of such communities have no need for government diktat to guide their behaviors and actions, but are instead motivated by a sense of belonging to their community and kinship with their neighbors. This thread of commonality and kinship stretches from the family, to the village and city, and all the way up to the creation of the Nation state. "Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer" brought this concept into clear focus.
