It is very tiring to spend time in an environment where there's almost total agreement that your ideas are stupid.

I appreciate that everyone's response to M was unfailingly polite. And usually there was a token bone thrown in like: "I never thought of it that way."

Even so, almost every stinkin' post sounds like it came out of Mein Kampf, lately. When you disagree, do you frame a clever response to every stinkin' post? Do you sit in the background and fume? It gets tiresome dealing with or otherwise just watching the fanatics saying the same thing over and over.

And what they are saying can usually be interpreted to mean that they hold the same contempt for our beliefs that they do for the liberals / democrats / ? in the news, who they are ripping to shreds.

Hatred is often expressed here. This is hatred that is indirectly pointed at anyone with a less than conservative point of view. Not intentionally, as the poster is only talking about the poor idiot with the bad fortune to be (mis?)quoted in the news.

It hurts to be surrounded by people who hate you. It can cause ulcers and loss of sleep (I suffer from both - though the ulcers are well controlled at the moment). It can cause depression, moodiness, pissiness, lots of things that can carry over to your personal life.

You seem to think it's an expression of cowardice to remove yourself from a situation that brings discord to your life. Have you been reading Neitze (SP!) lately?

When it is unpleasant to be here, people go elsewhere. There is nothing wrong with that and there is nothing wrong with MaryAnne.
