Why stop there?

Robert Graves' Emperor Claudius deliberately disinherits his noble son and names his degenerate stepson Nero as his successor. He does this knowing full well Nero and his mother are trying to have him assassinated.

His reasoning is that he believes Nero is going to be such a stinker that after his reign the Roman people will finally give up on the Imperial system and reinstitute the Republic.

We all see how well that turned out.

Actually, its pretty clear something like the scenario you describe is exactly what is going on. If Obama can rescue us from the Bush Recession, it will be the
Hoover-1929-Roosevelt-New Deal scenario all over again. It wasn't until practically that whole Depression generation died off before the GOP was able to get their Reagan Messiah, and he was only possible because of Jimmy Carter.

They have no intention of putting themselves through something like that again, and they have demonstrated that they are capable of doing whatever it takes to make sure it doesn't happen, even if it means wrecking the government, economy and the nation in order to discredit the Upstart.

My only question is who in the GOP even remotely qualifies as a benevolent despot, much less a benevolent oligarchy? These corporals of industry can't even run a banking system, what makes you think they can run the free world?
