I never had any illusions of ever using my house as a cash cow. If there is an economic crash, I doubt reverse mortgages or lines of credit will be available. I simply need a roof over my head, and a free title to sell it (at a loss if need be) if I ever have to move. In a pinch I can just abandon the place.
There is NO safe place to put your stash. Mine is in the safest possible place, a savings account and IRAs, but the banks can fail, along with FDIC, and wipe you out, in full or partially. Hyperinflation can do the same thing.
Pensions, including state and federal (my present income) can go away. Especially if the Republicans get elected. THere is no point in worrying about it because you have no more control over what happens than you do over an asteroid impact or an alien invasion.
In a total collapse of civilization and social order, I will last until my canned goods or ammo run out, which ever comes first. But that will never happen. A total collapse of civilization will leave a lot of unclaimed property around, and the business community will find some way of getting a piece of that action. You can bet your ass on that. Order will be restored, you can count on it.

- Corrected for inflation, the Federal government is spending more than the amount of the entire WWII debt every single year.
