We can all be scientifically aware.
This should be engraved in gold. We would not be in nearly the mess we are now if most people had even a dim working knowledge of science. A few hours on the MSNBC Space Board are enough to bring tears to the eyes.
This is especially true now that many of our major issues revolve around science issues: energy, climate, defense, space, etc. Most people let the media--not exactly a Hall of Nobel Laureates--distill it for them. I'd bet at least half the people against nuclear power wouldn't be able to tell you what a proton was to save their lives.
