Mark, I read Zubrin's entire piece above, and it is clear that for some reason Scoop has mis-characterized his analysis.
This mis-characterization probably has more to do with a desire by Space Frontier Foundation to expand further and to dominate Mars efforts, rather than having much to do with anything that Zubrin said in his analysis.
While Byzantine history is not my strong suit, I can't find anything objectionable in Zubrin's comments or his analysis, aside from the simple fact that Mars can not be terra-formed.
Historically, the rise of Moslem fundamentalism in the east is probably tied to the effects of the Mongol invasion. Thankfully, Islamic science continued on in the west in North Africa, and we living today are all the heirs of its benefits.
