...is that this news comes at a time when the Republicans are pushing their Big-Business Bank-Account Stimulus Scheme To Abundantly Reward Donors (B-B-BASSTARD) Act. It features a repeal and retroactive refund of the corporate Alternative Minimum Tax, which by nature allocates the "emergency stimulus" money in inverse proportion to need and effectiveness at actually stimulating the economy.
One company alone, General Electric, will receive a Treasury check for somewhere between $1.5 and 4 billion dollars...and the lower amount just happens to be what's needed to fund both the Pluto and Europa missions.
Meanwhile, we're told that America's in a cash squeeze, and everybody's going to have tighten their belts for the common good. This is the classic divide-and-conquer strategy the politicians have been using against space advocates for a long time. Declare at the start the budget is fixed, foreclose any discussion about actually increasing the budget, and set the different camps at each others' throats squabbling over whose worthy program gets the axe.
The ugly truth is, the money's there, if the politicians had the integrity to resist handing out billions in pork to their campaign contributors.
Evil. Pure evil.
