Space/Science » in reply to I think NASA is being restructured for a reason

Excellent point...

But I'm a lot less optimistic than you about the length of time to recover from a Shuttle accident. I don't believe they can build another any more...Atlantis was largely constructed of spare parts already on the shelf.

Should a Shuttle crash, the best possible outcome would be that they would have to stagger along with the remaining orbiters, trying to complete the Station and fly all the missions originally planned for four orbiters. This is assuming that the problem that caused the crash was fixable.

Should something happen to the Station, I doubt that the program would survive at all.

NASA has all its eggs in too few baskets, and I'm not the only one worried about it. At least we have other expendable launch vehicles, which almost wasn't the case when Challenger went down.
