Hello, Robert!
I too tend toward the island-hopping approach to Mars colonization. Mars is such a sexy objective; it plays into the whole pioneer mythos that both your nation and mine share, making it an easy sale on an emotional level.
Realistically, though, there need to be smaller, more practical projects to get us off-planet in shorter hops with more people, to get us used to the idea of many workers who commute vertically. Personally, I still think the Moon is the next logical place to go, as an intermediate base and a Mars training ground of sorts. A world away from world, so to speak.
So: who is the one to pull this chicken outfit together? Can people here agree that Mars is the long-range goal of this stage of off-world exploration and settlement, and begin to compile a series of projects that would capture the attention and approval of the rest of the planet?
What would appeal to people? Defense, profitmaking, adventure. Anybody out there care to take the first stab at arranging the stepping stones in the stream of space that separates Earth from Mars?
Regards--
Mary Anne
