"Normal" Is For Followers
It's pretty certain few things new were invented or started by those wanting to be normal. Most of the US population is descended from those who were not content with normal and I think that is part of American culture and what makes us different from so much of the world. Off course, many in Australia are descended from those even less concerned with social conventions. ;-)
One of my big hopes is that space colonization will result in a culture where scientific literacy has great value.
