>Politically speaking you need to select a target people are interested in. It is most contradictory to claim a need for political buy in and then claim NEO's are the logical next step. I've seen no poll supports that objective as a high priority among the general public. The Moon and Mars clearly are much more on people's mind.

Not my argument; which is:

Because NEOs now appear to be reachable with basically off the shelf technologies, such missions would be cheap enough to fly without massive increases in developmental space budgets; which means that the political selling point is simply the existing taste for manned flight rather than the target per se (ie, we're going to send people out to scientifically interesting asteroids rather than spending pretty much the same amount of money just getting them to LEO). Having gotten out & tried to sell space in the real world, i well know just how brittle taxpayer interest in space actually is; so while i can work out marketing strategies that use the visuals of near Earth targets to give these missions a reasonable level of public interest, i'm hardly going to oversell it as the Mars/Moon advocates tend to.
