It's not hard to imagine that Japanese commanders could very well have had that mindset.
The Japanese set up the "Patriotic Citizens Fighting Corps" arming their men, women, and children with swords and pointed sticks to kill invading US forces.
I wouldn't be the first time that the Japanese projected their beliefs and way of doing things on their enemy.
