I've spent a lot of time in the woods during hunting season. A very lot.
I have seen exactly 2 hunters (two) more than a quarter-mile away from a road. I've seen hundreds and hundreds cruising the roads. I've seen the small, medium, large and enormous camps from which these folks take off in their vehicles. All of them are on roads. Not all, there are some horse camps, and I've never seen a hunter and horse in the back-country. I've talked with them, asked them which trails they've been down, then asked about the stream about 1/2 mile in. They lie.
And everyone says, "Yeah, but those are scumbags. My friends and I don't even have our guns out along roads." Every one.
I'm not saying I would necessarily see those who were in the woods, but I don't think they are going off-trail very much. There may be people in stands, I don't know. I doubt there are many of those, either.
As far as their weapons go, face it. Without a lot of organization (how about a "well-regulated militia", what a novel concept) they are worse than useless because they give the person a false sense of security. A feeling of superiority and power which can get people into trouble.
And I'm not going to talk you out of it. You're invested in believing what you believe, and have a compulsion to argue with anything I espouse. Fortunately, in this country you don't have to worry. Your fantasy can continue, alive and well, and we can thank God for that.
