The flame really isn't about the collective intelligence of conservatives, so much as it is about that apparently uncontrollable impulse to spread those stupid and/or ugly memes. I'm not kidding when I tell you, over and over, that I do not receive that kind of crap from leftwingers.

This has been going on since long before email. The right was notorious for back-fence whisper campaigns in the '50s, and for posting anonymous mimeographed screeds on telephone poles and walls spreading the same kind of hysterical nonsense. I remember a time when every corner light pole had an anonymous "Impeach Earl Warren!" handbill with a long list of imaginary treasons. The content hasn't changed, only the delivery method.

Why? It's really an ugly impulse. Why do I only see conservatives give in to it?
