It isn't just free capitalist societies that allow their citizens to be armed to the teeth, as the NRA would like you to believe. You will recall that one of our problems in Iraq is that everybody had an AK-47 in his house. In Cuba, every healthy male of military age was in the militia and had a Czech machine pistol or a FAL assault rifle in his closet.
The idea that our way of life depends on every citizen being armed, and that only tyrannies disarm the populace, is simply not born out by the facts. It's a Red Dawn fantasy the gun lobby likes to trot out to protect their right to stay in the lucrative business of buying and selling firearms. It also makes a handy club to use against Democrats.
Believe me, I'm a 2nd amendment liberal. I own firearms and know how to use them, but I don't need to make up phony Minuteman excuses for doing so. I'll just tell you up front I don't trust my neighbors.
