<I've yet to meet a conservative who wasn't distinctly uncomfortable with this democracy thing, 'cause darn it, "those people" are always abusing their right to vote by voting the wrong way.
Let me put on my conservative cap here (I admit I do wear it often) and point out that through history there have always been rules to govern how people vote, and who votes, how those votes count. Even we are not a direct democracy, we do have what is called an 'electoral college', and those representatives to there can vote for a different candidate they were elected for (there was however an awful lot of courting them to last election). Often voting rules and percentages are changed around to get the desired result. . .in some places you need to have a majority (keep voting till the someone has greater than 50% of the vote) to be elected, some others you need a plurality (greatest percentage). Once you had to 'Own land" to vote (not a 'bad' idea), once you had to be male (ok, that was really not fair) still you have to be of a certain age to vote here. (like I wasn't as competent as a large percentage of voting dults when I was 14? also like the political outcome somehow only majigcally starts effecting our lives when we hit 18? I don't think so.) We still restrict felons from voting. . etc. . . all of these laws in a way are implemented to insure that you get good leaders elected.
Maybe we should just open all the doors to election? let every individual vote, the young ones the felons, the foreign citizens (afterall, decisions made here effect the WORLD. Why not let the world vote hu?)
my point here is that basically everyone here wants rules and restrictions on voting, and these rules efect the outcome in some way. Unless they are insane (see non 'citizens voting' in previous paragraph, if you anyone wants that to be allowed they need thier head checked) We have problems with Felons, foreigners and children voting because 'darnit they would vote the wrong way' e.g. the children are most likely echoing ther parents vote, the felons are just plain evil folks (I am being some what fecitious) and the foreigners are not serving out interests.
And just like some people could say, if there were the landowner requisite "those who don't own land don't really have a stake in the country as much I.E. they would be voting leaders who don't serve the countries interests, and are voting the wrong way".
I am not argueing for any certain requisite, only that the mindset of regulating the 'right to vote' is shared by nearly everyone on these very basic levels, and is nothing conservative specific.
