<...Is there something perversely twisted here in the liberal interpretation of the 1st amendment? Which act of speech really causes harm?
Of course it's perversely twisted. What else is new? The radical liberals that have taken over the ACLU* view the Constitution the same way they view everything else. It's just a tool to help them gain their single goal: absolute power over every aspect of the lives of humanity. As such, it is called up when needed, and ignored when not. The fact that this is inconsistent or hypocritical bothers them not in the least. These people stopped using the front end of their brains decades ago.
* In much the same way as many other advocacy organizations with proud histories have fallen to them in recent years. Most of the environmental movement is now a refuge for lost socialists and outright nihilists. I won't even start with the NOW, who is defending a woman who drowned her five children, enthusiatically defended Bill Clinton when he was accused of rape and was proven to have been diddling an intern in the Oval Office, and firmly believed that Clarence Thomas should have been flayed alive and dragged across the Utah Salt Flats by a team of wild horses for the crime of sexual innuendo around a woman who worked for him.
