I hope by now, realizing that I refuse to be pigeonholed, you won't be surprised to learn that for many years in the '70s I was a registered and card-carrying Libertarian. I dropped them after Lyndon LaRouche came to power, and the party took off on a tangent allied with white supremacy and neo-Nazism, and LaRouche ended up in jail on credit card fraud.
I took a look at the Libertarians this last election, but it seemd like LaRouche's influence was still too pernicious--their front-runner was a rabid LaRouchite. But there's hope for future elections, because the other, no-chance, candidates reflected the more thoughtful beliefs of classic Libertarianism. If they come to the fore again, the Libertarians might someday matter, and I may someday return to the fold.
