I'm a libertarian, and believe in theory in open borders, but under current conditions, with us in here and a billion Third Worlders out there anxious to get in, some control of the flow is essential.
For similar reasons, although I believe that government programs that louse up the free market need to be phased out, only an idiot would propose doing something like scrapping Social Security tomorrow.
What I would like to see is rational controls applied to immigration, with specific and constant requirements for immigration. It used to be a lot harder to get into this country legally than it is now.
And although this is controversial, we may want to consider changing the part of the Constitution that makes anyone born here an automatic citizen, by adding a few restrictions on the concept. Originally intended in the 14th Amendment as a mechanism to preserve the citizenship rights of ex-slaves,* the concept is being abused by illegal immigrants.
*Most of the rest of the 14th Amendment was apparently designed to keep that Rebel riff-raff out of our government
