After Spain, Portugal, Greece, Ireland joined the EU, their population average standards of living soared! They are much better off now than they ever were.
Their populations are now buying the same stuff the other richer Europeans had been buying for years. This benefits to the wealthier Europeans as they find a growing market in those countries that previously could not afford to buy our stuff.
