One of the things you said made me start to rethink my position somewhat: had we continued to maintain a high-level "Cold War" military, designed to fight the Soviet Union, we would now be heavily equipped to fight exactly the wrong kind of war.
The military was cut back, and admittedly--as alcaray has pointed out--not just from Clinton's efforts.
Now with the new military budgets I understand we are now being ramped up in weaponry areas that are specifically intended to help us fight this new kind of war. Maybe this does work out better for us in the long run as far as equipment and advanced weaponry goes.
However, I still think we could have done better to maintain basic infrastructure like parts and personnel.
You make another good point in that we have a good record of being able to get up to speed militarily from a standing start (Like WWII). Maybe allowing the military to go into "hibernation" between wars is a good idea. Is there a way it could be done more effectively? Any other opinions from the military guys?
Still, Bush probably wishes he had a few more cartridges on his belt going into this whole situation.
