You might be right, but a tax hike would kill Bush dead in the next election.
Why? Who else would the Right vote for? And you, you Libertarian you, tell me you'd vote for the Democratic nominee on a tax issue. If the object is to win the vast middle -- and it is -- the time to sell the need for a tax hike is now. A policy adjustment, like a joke, is only as good as its set-up.
The alternative, deficit spending, isn't likely to be any more attractive.
And remember, the military weakness bit was largely speculation on the part of Worldnet Daily.
Call me a cynic, but I think that's a plant. If I were going to try to influence the opinion of people to the right of center, I wouldn't be putting stories like that in the Boston Globe.
