Without consequence

T. B. - "Possessing the immunity that all leftists have against being considered "racist," he is also able to utter the word "nigger" in public without consequence, an offense that, committed by a Republican, would result in immediate drawing and quartering."

Another of those charming, well-documented overstatements some people grace with the name "hyperbole". It's probably not "hyperbole", though, as "hyperbole" is an exaggeration, an overstatement, whereas this one is inaccurate, not true.

The reality is that Byrd faced consequences for that statement, which, as I recall, was on Fox News Sunday. I saw the original interview. A tragic choice of words, beyond poor judgement. And the conservative knee-jerk "we've got him now" reaction overlooked the sentiment. As I recall he was talking about whites who keep racial divisions going, he wasn't referring to Afro-Americans. That was lost on people who were more interested in the PC pilloring.

And, his choice of words did not reflect on anyone but him. It certainly didn't reflect on Afro-Americans. It made a statement about an old man. It was and is sad.

Now to the point of your remark. There was a tremendous fuss over it. Hell, you're still quoting it. If there had been no fuss, would you know?

This is just like your statement the Harvard graduation speaker got away with using "jihad". There was a fuss over that, too. Or you wouldn't have known.

What consequence do you want Byrd to face? The old man made a pretty complete fool of himself. What would you call a consequence? What would make you happy?
