Comparing Newt Gingrich to Robert Byrd is like comparing The Hulk to Mohammed Ali.
Newt was a complete hypocrite, crucifying Clinton while engaging in the same behavior.
Byrd is pretty much a gentleman. No one has, to my knowledge, accused him of improprieties. When asked about Clinton he would generally demur, saying something on the order of not understanding the man well. He turned down invitations to social functions with the Clintons.
Gingrich brought what happened to him just as did Clinton. Conservatives, however, define hypocrisy and immorality as what the other guy does.
Byrd used a perjorative term about whites. Not blacks. He used a term which has come to mean something derogatory, and said whites behaved that way.
Not Blacks. Didn't say anything about Blacks.
A fine point, too fine. He should not have done it. But, he wasn't running around accusing Gingrich of using the term, either.
Newt was (is) a bright man, brought down exactly like Clinton. And contrary to the moral relativism of the conservative, right-wing, fundamental Christian political philosophy, if your guy commits adultery, it's adultery. If he commits adultery while railing against the other guy doing it, he's a hypocrite. Even though he's a conservative.
What a concept!
