Re: Don't think this is good.

A desert island? Get real. A common technique used by amateurs in a discussion of political philosophy, particularly where libertarianism or objectivism is concerned, is generating some off-the-wall "lifeboat" situation as a test.

I don't live on a lifeboat with three people, and only room for two, or a desert island which somehow manages to contain no vegetation or fresh water, and neither do you.

If you have read any of Ayn Rand you know there is more to rational self-interest than simply preying on other human beings, but I don't want to get into that kind of a discussion here.

And of course you can define something usefully by what it isn't, or doesn't do. As just one example, our distant ancestors defined "good food" as pretty much anything that didn't make them sick. Later, with the luxury of prosperity, we could get fancy about gourmet descriptions.
